Dog Trainer Apprenticeship – Expectations vs Reality

Expectation:
“I love dogs, so this will be easy and fun all the time.”
Reality:
You’ll absolutely have fun—but you’ll also be learning complex skills, observing closely, asking questions, and thinking critically. Dog training is as much about people, timing, and problem-solving as it is about dogs.

Expectation:
“I’ll be training dogs independently right away.”
Reality:
You’ll spend a lot of time watching, assisting, and practicing fundamentals before leading anything. Skill comes from repetition and mentorship—not rushing.

Expectation:
“This is just playing with dogs.”
Reality:
You’ll be learning behaviour, body language, reinforcement timing, class flow, and client communication. This is professional education, not casual dog time.

Expectation:
“I already have dog experience, so I’ll move faster.”
Reality:
Experience helps—but everyone starts here by learning our methods, values, and standards. Openness and curiosity matter more than ego.
Expectation:
“I’ll be told exactly what to do.”
Reality:
We guide and mentor, but we expect apprentices to think, reflect, ask questions, and take responsibility for their own learning.

Expectation: “This will be an easy side gig.”
Reality:
This is for people who want to build real skill and a long-term career in dog training.
If this still sounds exciting to you—we’d love to hear from you.

FAQ

1Is this a paid position?
No, this is an apprenticeship program, but you will be compensated with class time for offering admin hours if you wish.
2Is there a cost to the apprenticeship?
Yes. This is a professional training program. • 6-month apprenticeship: $2,000 • 12-month apprenticeship: $3,800 This covers hands-on instruction, mentorship, and real-world training experience.
3Are there kennel duties?
If you are available during day care days there are dogs that need to be pottied, and crates to be wiped down at the end of the day, but not typical kennel duties.
4What will my day look like?
Arrive and stay for 2-4 hours shadowing, helping with class set up and tear down including cleaning at the end of the day. Time will be arranged during each week to discuss questions and concerns from the week, this will not happen each day.
5Can I train my own dog
Yes! Admin hours are traded for the opportunity to train your personal dog in group classes at no cost, so you can apply what you’re learning with support.
6Do I need prior dog training experience?
No formal training is required, but prior dog or animal experience is a strong asset. We’re looking for motivated, thoughtful learners.
7Is this a path to employment?
For the right candidate, yes. This apprenticeship can lead to ongoing work or a long-term role with Unleashed Niagara.
8Is there a non-compete or conflict of interest policy?
During the apprenticeship, we ask that apprentices focus on learning within our program and not take on independent training clients locally. This helps avoid conflicts of interest and keeps expectations clear for everyone. Details can be outlined more clearly at your interview.
